Please acquire skills, but don't get it twisted with gifts

I operate in the human development sector, so I know the relevance of skill acquisition to human development. But I can boldly say it is not the same as a gift. I once wrote an article that I titled one talent, many skill.

Let me say this, a gift can come in form of a talent, but it is not necessarily a talent. Speaking in other tongues is a gift, is it a talent? A gift can be inborn or impacted. You don't learn a gift, but you learn a skill and as such can lose it because it is relative in nature.

OK, why this talk on differentiating between gift and talent?

Well, you have probably heard that talent is not enough, and have acquired numerous skills, and yet something still seems to be missing, if that is you then you need to thirst for gift(s). You see, a gift is meant for something, it comes with a purpose and impacts.

I began to process this thought-line when I mediated on a birthday message a friend sent to me four years ago, I never forgot it. And also, this verse that says the gift of a man will make room for him and bring him before great men. The message translation says a gift attracts attention. (Proverbs 18:16).

Note what it says about skill, "Observe people who are good at their work. Skilled workers are always in demand and admired; they don't take a backseat to anyone" -Proverbs 22:29.

Can you see the difference? A skill will make you be in demand, but a gift will create a special attention for you.

I recently listened to a christian radio program, the presenter was asking callers some biblical questions and with the rate at which many people called into the program I was amazed. Sincerely, I was amazed because it was a 'Christian thing'. But you see, the presenter was so good and creative that it is either you are smiling or laughing (and in a way, it tells you to study your bible). Tell me who wouldn't want to listen to such a fun program. The guy combines gift with skill.

Gift is fun, it wows people, but it is for a purpose. I know a girl, who said she started singing well after she was prayed for, that is a gift coming inform of a skill, and the purpose is not far fetched, to glorify God. Bezaleel was blessed with the ultimate gift (Holy Spirit) and also blessed with skill to create designs that wows people. (Exodus 31:2-5)

Here are a list of gifts that you can desire and add to your skills:

- Holy Spirit (Luke 11:13)
- Vision and revelation (2 Cor 12:1)
- Creativity (Gal 6:1 MSG)
- The nine gifts of the spirit ( 1 Cor 12:7-10)

The first gift, which is the Holy Spirit actually covers all but I still listed them anyway. Well, what else will I say or write? Add gifts to your skill and your light will not only shine brightly, it will shine with special effects... LOL!
